No Time Frame Yet For Schools Reopening ,Says FGN
The Federal government of Nigeria has said that there's no time frame yet to reopen the schools in Nigeria, indicating that the school could only be reopened when it is safe to do so.
This position was expressed by the state Minister of Education, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba during a live NTA interactive meeting held on Tuesday night, 10.30 pm. The programme was hosted by the popular NTA journalist, Omini Ode, and consists of the honourable minister of State Education, Director General of National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Commissioner of Education in Enugu, Pro. Uche Eze (joined via zoom) and a parent from Kano(joined via zoom) also..
Mr. Emeka, the Honourable Minister of Education reinstated the fact that the school for the general students of secondary schools and primary schools would not be reopening yet. During the interview he stated :
"We cannot reopen schools until it is safe to do so".
Mr. Nwajiuba also indicated, in the reopening of schools for the generality of the students in the primary, secondary and tertiary institutions, the congregation aspect is what is more paramount, while the institutions of learning may not fully be opened yet.
He, therefore, urged every educational instructors, parents, and guardians to use educational facilities offered to them both offline and online mode by the government for the students to learn with.
Backing the statement of the state Minister of Education up and explaining further why reopening of the schools could not be as quick yet, the Director-General of NACA, Dr. Sani Aliyu indicated that the level of compliance to the COVID-19 rules and guidelines is very low across the country and that most public schools already have the issue of sanitation and overcrowding.
He, then debunked the rumour that the schools for the generalities, aside from the exiting classes, would be opened on September 17 saying, the Ministry, in line with Presidential Taskforce's guidelines and protocols, will not open schools at the moment given the fact that the few days of easing the lockdown for exiting schools had already caused a spike of the pandemic.
For the fact that it will be very difficult for most of the children below the ages of 13 or 15 to keep to the protocols and guidelines of the COVID-19, they can easily get infected and might easily transmit the disease to the parents, should the Federal Government be in haste at this time, to reopen schools for general students.
