COVID-19:NANS Plans Protests Nationwide Over Continued Closure Of Schools

The National Association of Nigerian Students has concluded plans for a nationwide protest, beginning from Abuja, over the continued closure of schools as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic passing across universities, polytechnics and colleges of education by the NANS Senate President, Ibrahim Muhammed Lawal, dated August 14, 2020, revealed the plan.

The memo called on the National Association of University Students, National Association of Polytechnic Students and National Association of Nigeria Colleges of Education Students to take part in the nationwide protest to be flagged off at the Federal Ministry of Education premises in Abuja on August 19, 2020.

Lawal called on the leaders of the students bodies to mobilise students for the protest and make the management of their institutions to release buses for that purpose.

He also indicated that the International Human Rights Commission, Nigeria Police and DSS (Department of State Services) will be fully on ground to ensure that the protest is carried out orderly without any form of violence.

     Lagos State primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions will be using staggered timetables and different teaching practices to meet the COVID-19 protocols as directed by the state government. The state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had announced that tertiary institutions would resume September 14, with primary and secondary schools tentatively reopening September 21. Commenting on the development, the vice-chancellor, Lagos State University (LASU), Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun on Monday, indicated that students of the university would resume in batches from September.        The Federal Government of Nigeria says state governments and school administrators should start making preparations for the full resumption of school in the country. COVID-19:Lagos State Education Ministry Disowns School Calendar Out

    The Lagos State Ministry of Education has distanced itself from an academic calendar stating school reopening in the state. The ministry’s Education Quality Assurance, OEQA, unit called on inhabitants of the state to disregard the resumption time table circulating on social media. The purported 2020/2021 academic calendar, indicates that the first term of the session would start September 21, 2020 and end December 18, 2020. The academic calendar also indicated that  January 11, 2021 and May 3, 2021, as the commencement dates for the second term. Reacting, the Public Affairs Officer, OEQA, Mr. Emmanuel Olaniran, stated that the timetable did not emanate from the ministry. Any school willing to resume must be cleared and given a go-ahead by their State Government. In the PTF meeting which was held yesterday, September 14th, the minister  of state for education Chukwuemaka Nwajiuba stated that t he Ministry of education would shut down any  school that violates covid-19 protocols. Any school that plans to resume must first make sure all covid 19 containment measures are put in place for safe reopening for their student.      The Federal Ministry of Education in conjunction with the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, Committee on Safe School Re-opening, on Monday, started a process for the development of school reopening readiness template. Azuka Menkiti, Education Specialist, UNICEF, made this known in Kaduna, at the opening of a three-day technical seminar of the Committee on Safe School Re-opening. She stated this is to guide the re-opening of schools across the country.
