COVID-19:NANS Plans Protests Nationwide Over Continued Closure Of Schools

The National Association of Nigerian Students has concluded plans for a nationwide protest, beginning from Abuja, over the continued closure of schools as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic passing across universities, polytechnics and colleges of education by the NANS Senate President, Ibrahim Muhammed Lawal, dated August 14, 2020, revealed the plan.

The memo called on the National Association of University Students, National Association of Polytechnic Students and National Association of Nigeria Colleges of Education Students to take part in the nationwide protest to be flagged off at the Federal Ministry of Education premises in Abuja on August 19, 2020.

Lawal called on the leaders of the students bodies to mobilise students for the protest and make the management of their institutions to release buses for that purpose.

He also indicated that the International Human Rights Commission, Nigeria Police and DSS (Department of State Services) will be fully on ground to ensure that the protest is carried out orderly without any form of violence.

COVID-19:Schools To Resume with Staggered Timetables In Lagos State

     Lagos State primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions will be using staggered timetables and different teaching practices to meet the COVID-19 protocols as directed by the state government. The state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had announced that tertiary institutions would resume September 14, with primary and secondary schools tentatively reopening September 21. Commenting on the development, the vice-chancellor, Lagos State University (LASU), Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun on Monday, indicated that students of the university would resume in batches from September. Fagbohun, in a radio interview monitored in Lagos, explained that 400, 500 and 600 level students would resume first when other levels of students would come on board later.         The sum of N1.5bn was spent as COVID-19 relief fund for staff of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC , Kemebradikumo Pondei, Acting Managing Director of the commission, said. Pondei revealed this at the investigative hearing on the N40bn corruption allegation against the commission. The Senate had on May 5 set up a seven-man ad-hoc committee to investigate the financial mismanagement of the Interim Management Committee of the NDDC.                      The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for caution as African airlines resume operations in various countries. The WHO stressed that strict measures should be observed to prevent surges in Corona virus infections. The organisation asked governments to ensure airlines collect the information of passengers travelling and follow up with them to prevent outbreaks. Remember  that schools in the country were shut in March as part of measures to curtail the spread of the coronavirus disease.
