COVID-19 Vaccine Update:US,Russia,China Claim Mojor Breakthrough,India Starts Trials

Amidst the urgency to develop the coronavirus vaccine at the earliest, various countries are now claiming to be in different stages of trials of the vaccine. Here are selected for you the updates on the development of the vaccine around the world.

Vaccine in India:

         

COVAXIN has entered the human trials phase.It is jointly developed by Bharat Biotech, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and National Institute of Virology, Pune.
The clinical trial has started at the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Patna. Another potential candidate Zydus Cadila is still at Phase I.
AIIMS-Patna has commenced testing the candidate vaccine on 10 volunteers picked by the hospital authority for the trial, reported AIR.

According to the report, the first dose of the vaccine has been administered to the study participants, who will be given the second dose at an interval of 14 days.

Vaccine in USA:

      

Biotech firm Moderna Inc's experimental vaccine for COVID-19 showed it was safe and provoked immune responses in all 45 healthy volunteers in an ongoing early-stage study, U.S. researchers revealed on Tuesday
Volunteers who got two doses of the vaccine had high levels of virus-killing antibodies that exceeded the average levels seen in people who had recovered from COVID-19, the team disclosed in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The US will deliver a Coronavirus COVID19 vaccine in the “record-breaking time”, stated American President Donald Trump.
The US President has declared that America will deliver a COVID19 vaccine in record-breaking time through “Operation Warp Speed”.

Vaccine in Russia:

   
   
Russian scientists said they are aiming to launch the vaccine by mid-August, says a report.
According to Director of the Gamaleya Scientific Research Institute, Alexander Gintsburg, there are expectstions that "a small amount" of the vaccine would be available to people in the middle of August, and private companies could start producing vaccines in the beginning or the middle of September, as reported by Sputnik News.
The head of the research institute added that the vaccine may not be available in pharmacies in the near future.

Vaccine in China:

      

CanSino Biologics looks to be one of the front runners in the race to develop a vaccine for the novel coronavirus.
The vaccine candidate of the Chinese drugmaker has been approved for limited usage for the military in China for a period of one year.
Its vaccine candidate Ad5-nCoV is developed with the use of the drugmaker's adenovirus-based viral vector vaccine technology platform.

Coronavirus vaccine UK, Oxford, AstraZeneca

      

In the UK, two potential Coronavirus vaccine candidates have raised hope. One is developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca is at Phase III. Another is being developed by Imperial College London and its has entered the Phase II stage.

Ogun State To Reopen Schools Sept 21,To Adopt Staggered Timetables

          The Ogun State Government has announced Monday, September 21, 2020, the date for reopening of schools in the state for the first term of 2020/2021 session. The government, however, staggered the resumption and closing times for primary and secondary schools, while colleges and tertiary institutions keep full normal hours. The government said this on Monday in a press release by the Chief Press Secretary to the state Governor, Kunle Somorin. The government indicated that early child care development and education classes from three to five years of age are not  resuming yet in public schools until the next phase of school reopening. Schools Reopening:Lagos State Approves 20/21 Academic Calendar

    The Lagos State Ministry of Education has released school calendar for 2020/2021 session. Olaniran Emmanuel, Head of Public Affairs, Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) issued the details in a statement at the weekend. Public and private schools below tertiary level will commence First Term academic activities on Monday, 21st September, 2020 while the term runs through Friday 18th December, 2020. The Second Term begins on Monday 4th January, 2020 and runs through Friday 6th April, 2021 while students will resume for Third Term on Tuesday 4th May, 2021 and close on Friday 6th August, 2021. Director-General, OEQA, Abiola Seriki-Ayeni, urged school leaders to adopt a qualitative health and safety plan that will help protect students, teachers and workers.       The Ogun  state government,Nigeria, has announced that all students had been given automatic promotion to the next class, including automatic enrollment for primary 6 students in public primary schools into JSS1 of public secondary schools.  New students who are resuming for the first time after the nationwide closure in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will join students in SS3 who are now writing the West African School Certificate Examination. The students will be joining in their new classes for the first term of 2020/2021 academic session.
