COVID-19:Charging School Fees For Third Term Is Right,Says FGN

The Federal Government  of Nigeria has said that private school owners have the right to charge fees for the third term as school is resuming for exit classes.
The Minister of State for Education, Mr Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, stated this at the media briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 in Abuja on Monday.
Nwajiuba was responding to a question on if it was proper for private schools to charge a third term fee since the period the exit students would spend in school was very short.
He indicated that private school owners were running a business venture and not a charity organisation.
The Minister explained: “For public institutions, we can’t tell you that we charge school fees, as most of our schools are free. Public schools are free and vary from state to state.
"But when you go into a contractual relationship with a school owner, a school owner is a passionate person but is also a business person. He or she is not running a charity organisation, they may be charitable in its approach, but it’s not charity.
“So, it’s important that you appreciate that a private school is entitled to charge fees for the work they do. The person that runs a school may be passionate about education but will still charge fees.”

COVID-19:Students Protest Continued Closure Of High Institutions

      Students of tertiary institutions on Wednesday urged the Federal Government to reopen schools that have been shut down as part of moves to curtail further spread of COVID-19. They argued that schools could not remain shut while markets and worship centres had been re-opened. The students made their position known during a peaceful protest in Abuja. The protest took place both at the Unity Fountain and at the Ministry of Education, both in the Federal Capital Territory. The President of the National Association of University Students, Ejigah Felix, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, lamented the fact that schools have been closed for too long. COVID-19:Ogun Gov.To Refund Test Charges To Parents,Apologizes

         Ogun State Government is to refund money already paid by some parents for COVID-19 tests for their children. The government had earlier made it mandatory for each boarding pupil in private schools to pay N25,000 part payment for the test. Governor Dapo Abiodun, however, cancelled the test on Monday, after opposition and protests. The governor also apologized for the stress that this earlier decision caused affected parents and pupils. The Ogun government had stopped  COVID-19 test as a mandatory requirement for returning students in the exit class in Senior Secondary schools in the state. Gov. COVID-19:FGN Says Any School Caught Violating Safety Protocols As They Resume Will be shut down

  As some states are about to  resume school, the Federal Government of Nigeria said normal procedures should be followed. Any school willing to resume must be cleared and given a go-ahead by their State Government.
