COVID-19:Charging School Fees For Third Term Is Right,Says FGN

The Federal Government  of Nigeria has said that private school owners have the right to charge fees for the third term as school is resuming for exit classes.
The Minister of State for Education, Mr Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, stated this at the media briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 in Abuja on Monday.
Nwajiuba was responding to a question on if it was proper for private schools to charge a third term fee since the period the exit students would spend in school was very short.
He indicated that private school owners were running a business venture and not a charity organisation.
The Minister explained: “For public institutions, we can’t tell you that we charge school fees, as most of our schools are free. Public schools are free and vary from state to state.
"But when you go into a contractual relationship with a school owner, a school owner is a passionate person but is also a business person. He or she is not running a charity organisation, they may be charitable in its approach, but it’s not charity.
“So, it’s important that you appreciate that a private school is entitled to charge fees for the work they do. The person that runs a school may be passionate about education but will still charge fees.”

COVID-19:WHO Urges Safety As African Airlines Resume Flights

                     The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for caution as African airlines resume operations in various countries. The WHO stressed that strict measures should be observed to prevent surges in Corona virus infections. The organisation asked governments to ensure airlines collect the information of passengers travelling and follow up with them to prevent outbreaks. The WHO Regional Director for Africa Dr. Matshidiso Moeti indicated air travel was important for the economy but the current situation still requires stringent measures to stem the spread of Covid-19.                      The Federal Government of Nigeria -FGN - has presented the guidelines proposals for the reopening of schools across the nation to the National Assembly.          The Federal Government Of Nigeria on Monday ordered all schools in the country to reopen for graduating pupils in Primary 6, JSS 3 and SSS 3 as from August,4. It also announced that this year’s 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination,WASSCE would commence on August ,17. This was contained in a statement published on Monday by the Director, Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education, Ben Goong. In the statement titled, ‘Exit Classes To Reopen August 4th’, the ministry indicated that the agreed dates were part of the resolutions reached after a consultative meeting with the education commissioners of the 36 states of the federation and other stakeholders.
