Private School Teachers In Nigeria Stage Protests Over Unpaid Salaries
The National Association of Private School Teachers (NAPRIST) staged a protest on Monday July 13, over the nonpayment of their salaries and continued closure of schools. They begged the Federal Government and stakeholders to look into their plight as a result of the continued schools closure.
Schools have remained closed since the outbreak of COVID-19 in February. Many of the school owners have not paid their staff a dime since the closure. The teachers in Government schools have been smiling to the bank despite the closure because the Federal and State Governments are responsible for their salaries .
Private schools proprietors, on the other hand, rely solely on the school fees paid by the parents of their students. They claim that parents are not paying any fees since their children are out of schools. Even those that have not paid the last term fees refuse to do so in the wake of the pandemic.
Meanwhile, an unidentified man who should be in his late 30 was seen lamenting in a video uploaded on YouTube. In the 30 minutes video, the man was full of emotions and tears as he expressed the extent of sufferings the private schools teachers are going through right now in Nigeria.
In his words he said "I want to say this without mincing words that private school teachers are suffering. There are a lot of teachers on the street right now that have nothing to feed their family with. Please whosoever is watching this and you have any private school teacher in your area, please kindly help them. It is high time we stood up to help ourselves."
As this man rightly said, please extend a hand of friendship to any private school teacher around you who is experiencing a similar situation.
