FGN Makes U-Turn,Set To Reschedule WAEC,School Reopening

Except any sudden change in plans, schools in Nigeria would reopen in September, a senior official of Federal Ministry of Education confirmed to Daily Sun on Friday, in Abuja.
The official said the decision will be implemented after schools might have been put in proper position to control the spread of COVlD-l9.
The senior official of Federal Ministry of Education also told Daily Sun that officials of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) have been consulting with the Ministry, National Assembly and other relevant agencies in a move  to persuade the government to reopen schools so as to allow graduating students to participate in the regional examination.
The official, however, confirmed WAEC officials have been uncomfortable since Nigeria announced that its students would not participate in the 2020 WAEC examination. Since then, they have been lobbying and using every opportunity to make the government see reasons to reverse the decision and allow students take part in the examination.
The official said: “The Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, met with WAEC officials on Monday, and WAEC officials agreed to further consult with four other countries on the possibility of a new date for the examination.”
Meanwhile, the Director of Press, Federal Ministry of Education, Ben Bem Goong, in a statement, on Friday, indicated that Federal Government has given school owners in the country up to 29th July, to meet specific guidelines towards the safe reopening of schools.
The Ministry’s spokesman also confirmed that the Ministry has met with Federal Ministry of Health, Nigerian Centre for Disease Control,(NCDC), the Education in Emergencies Working Group, and had developed and circulated guidelines for safe reopening of schools.
He indicated the Minister has directed school owners to carefully study the recently released guidelines for safe reopening of schools, prepare and comply with the guidelines so that schools can be reopened.
He explained: “Schools are to undertake self-assessment and send feedback to State Ministries of Education, not later than 29th July, 2020. Thereafter, consultations with relevant stakeholders will be held on 30th July, 2020, to review the situation and decide on a specific date for reopening of schools or otherwise.
"We have consulted widely with stakeholders in the education sector, including Commissioners of Education in all the states of the federation, the Association of Private School Owners of Nigeria,(APSON), National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools,(NAPPS), Provosts of Colleges of Education, Rectors of Polytechnics, Vice Chancellors of Universities, State Governors, and development partners on the issue of safe reopening of schools.”
Recall that, on Monday, Federal Government released 52 page guideline document for safe reopening of schools, admonishing schools to strictly comply with the guidelines for the safety of students and teachers against COVID-19.

Ogun State To Reopen Schools Sept 21,To Adopt Staggered Timetables

          The Ogun State Government has announced Monday, September 21, 2020, the date for reopening of schools in the state for the first term of 2020/2021 session. The government, however, staggered the resumption and closing times for primary and secondary schools, while colleges and tertiary institutions keep full normal hours. The government said this on Monday in a press release by the Chief Press Secretary to the state Governor, Kunle Somorin. The government indicated that early child care development and education classes from three to five years of age are not  resuming yet in public schools until the next phase of school reopening. Schools Reopening:Lagos State Approves 20/21 Academic Calendar

    The Lagos State Ministry of Education has released school calendar for 2020/2021 session. Olaniran Emmanuel, Head of Public Affairs, Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) issued the details in a statement at the weekend. Public and private schools below tertiary level will commence First Term academic activities on Monday, 21st September, 2020 while the term runs through Friday 18th December, 2020. The Second Term begins on Monday 4th January, 2020 and runs through Friday 6th April, 2021 while students will resume for Third Term on Tuesday 4th May, 2021 and close on Friday 6th August, 2021.       The Ogun  state government,Nigeria, has announced that all students had been given automatic promotion to the next class, including automatic enrollment for primary 6 students in public primary schools into JSS1 of public secondary schools.  New students who are resuming for the first time after the nationwide closure in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will join students in SS3 who are now writing the West African School Certificate Examination.
