Schools Reopening:Lagos State Approves 20/21 Academic Calendar

The Lagos State Ministry of Education has released school calendar for 2020/2021 session.

Olaniran Emmanuel, Head of Public Affairs, Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) issued the details in a statement at the weekend.

Public and private schools below tertiary level will commence First Term academic activities on Monday, 21st September, 2020 while the term runs through Friday 18th December, 2020.

The Second Term begins on Monday 4th January, 2020 and runs through Friday 6th April, 2021 while students will resume for Third Term on Tuesday 4th May, 2021 and close on Friday 6th August, 2021.

Director-General, OEQA, Abiola Seriki-Ayeni, urged school leaders to adopt a qualitative health and safety plan that will help protect students, teachers and workers.

She stated it is not enough to reopen but to keep staying opened since some schools all over the world had to shut down after reopening due to a spike in the pandemic.

“All schools must make efforts to comply with these requirements, not just for the improvement of the overall school operations but for safe reopening for academic activities to support the Lagos State Government quest for a full return.”

Seriki-Ayeni advised schools to have a flexible teaching and learning plan where students and teachers who feel sick could teach or learn from home via available online platforms.

He reminded schools that they must strive to avoid COVID-19 infections.

Teachers, students and visitors are expected to wear face mask all the time, observe physical distancing, wash hands at intervals and maintain high standard of personal hygiene.

Lagos State government made it mandatory for schools to have an isolation/holding bay to care for medical emergencies should students come up with symptoms like cough, headache, catarrh, difficulty in breathing, sneezing and fever.

No Time Frame Yet For Schools Reopening ,Says FGN

       The Federal government of Nigeria has said that there's no time frame yet to reopen the schools in Nigeria, indicating that the school could only be reopened when it is safe to do so. This position was expressed by the state Minister of Education, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba during a live NTA interactive meeting held on Tuesday night, 10.30 pm. The programme was hosted by the popular NTA journalist, Omini Ode, and consists of the honourable minister of State Education, Director General of National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Commissioner of Education in Enugu, Pro.           The Ogun State Government has announced Monday, September 21, 2020, the date for reopening of schools in the state for the first term of 2020/2021 session. The government, however, staggered the resumption and closing times for primary and secondary schools, while colleges and tertiary institutions keep full normal hours. The government said this on Monday in a press release by the Chief Press Secretary to the state Governor, Kunle Somorin. The government indicated that early child care development and education classes from three to five years of age are not  resuming yet in public schools until the next phase of school reopening. Schools Reopening:Ogun State Grants Automatic Promotion To All Students

      The Ogun  state government,Nigeria, has announced that all students had been given automatic promotion to the next class, including automatic enrollment for primary 6 students in public primary schools into JSS1 of public secondary schools.  New students who are resuming for the first time after the nationwide closure in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will join students in SS3 who are now writing the West African School Certificate Examination. The students will be joining in their new classes for the first term of 2020/2021 academic session. Meanwhile, early Child Care Development and Education classes, comprising pupils of 3-5 years, will not resume yet in public schools until the next phase of schools’ reopening.
