COVID-19:Lagos State Education Ministry Disowns School Calendar Out

The Lagos State Ministry of Education has distanced itself from an academic calendar stating school reopening in the state.

The ministry’s Education Quality Assurance, OEQA, unit called on inhabitants of the state to disregard the resumption time table circulating on social media.

The purported 2020/2021 academic calendar, indicates that the first term of the session would start September 21, 2020 and end December 18, 2020.

The academic calendar also indicated that January 11, 2021 and May 3, 2021, as the commencement dates for the second term.

Reacting, the Public Affairs Officer, OEQA, Mr. Emmanuel Olaniran, stated that the timetable did not emanate from the ministry.

A statement by Olaniran reads: “The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology enjoins all stakeholders and members of the public to take note of the details of the academic calendar.

“Full academic programme should commence on the first day of each term. All public holidays are to be observed as may be directed by Federal/State government. All public and private schools are to adhere strictly to the school calendar.”

“Please be informed that the academic calendar above did not emanate from the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA). Kindly disregard.”

Recall that the state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu had Saturday announced dates for resumption of schools, amid COVID-19 outbreak .

Ogun State To Reopen Schools Sept 21,To Adopt Staggered Timetables

          The Ogun State Government has announced Monday, September 21, 2020, the date for reopening of schools in the state for the first term of 2020/2021 session. The government, however, staggered the resumption and closing times for primary and secondary schools, while colleges and tertiary institutions keep full normal hours. The government said this on Monday in a press release by the Chief Press Secretary to the state Governor, Kunle Somorin. The government indicated that early child care development and education classes from three to five years of age are not  resuming yet in public schools until the next phase of school reopening.     The Lagos State Ministry of Education has released school calendar for 2020/2021 session. Olaniran Emmanuel, Head of Public Affairs, Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) issued the details in a statement at the weekend. Public and private schools below tertiary level will commence First Term academic activities on Monday, 21st September, 2020 while the term runs through Friday 18th December, 2020. The Second Term begins on Monday 4th January, 2020 and runs through Friday 6th April, 2021 while students will resume for Third Term on Tuesday 4th May, 2021 and close on Friday 6th August, 2021.       The Ogun  state government,Nigeria, has announced that all students had been given automatic promotion to the next class, including automatic enrollment for primary 6 students in public primary schools into JSS1 of public secondary schools.  New students who are resuming for the first time after the nationwide closure in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will join students in SS3 who are now writing the West African School Certificate Examination. The students will be joining in their new classes for the first term of 2020/2021 academic session.
