COVID-19:Lagos State Education Ministry Disowns School Calendar Out

The Lagos State Ministry of Education has distanced itself from an academic calendar stating school reopening in the state.

The ministry’s Education Quality Assurance, OEQA, unit called on inhabitants of the state to disregard the resumption time table circulating on social media.

The purported 2020/2021 academic calendar, indicates that the first term of the session would start September 21, 2020 and end December 18, 2020.

The academic calendar also indicated that January 11, 2021 and May 3, 2021, as the commencement dates for the second term.

Reacting, the Public Affairs Officer, OEQA, Mr. Emmanuel Olaniran, stated that the timetable did not emanate from the ministry.

A statement by Olaniran reads: “The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology enjoins all stakeholders and members of the public to take note of the details of the academic calendar.

“Full academic programme should commence on the first day of each term. All public holidays are to be observed as may be directed by Federal/State government. All public and private schools are to adhere strictly to the school calendar.”

“Please be informed that the academic calendar above did not emanate from the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA). Kindly disregard.”

Recall that the state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu had Saturday announced dates for resumption of schools, amid COVID-19 outbreak .

COVID-19:Students Protest Continued Closure Of High Institutions

      Students of tertiary institutions on Wednesday urged the Federal Government to reopen schools that have been shut down as part of moves to curtail further spread of COVID-19. They argued that schools could not remain shut while markets and worship centres had been re-opened. The students made their position known during a peaceful protest in Abuja.          Ogun State Government is to refund money already paid by some parents for COVID-19 tests for their children. The government had earlier made it mandatory for each boarding pupil in private schools to pay N25,000 part payment for the test. Governor Dapo Abiodun, however, cancelled the test on Monday, after opposition and protests. The governor also apologized for the stress that this earlier decision caused affected parents and pupils.
